Sadly we live in a society where people are obsessed with youth and looks, and age is seen as the enemy of achievement.
Listen to any sports commentator debating the chances of a nippy 28 year old who’s the “oldest player in the team”. Older workers get sidelined by gung ho Gen Xs and Ys. Advertising is rife with ageist stereotypes. Our language is riddled with derogatory terms like old farts, fossils, crocks, wrinklies, fogies and nana naps.
Live long enough, pay your dues and you too can have labels, judgement and society’s automatic assumption of a use-by date to look forward to.
