And they’re off! In a country caught up in Spring Racing Carnival fever, seems every which way you turn there’s a kaleidoscope of fascinators, frou frous, fashions on the field and a fair share of scary fashion faux pas assaulting the eyes.

But bad hats, bad do’s and “what were they thinking, don’t they own a mirror” looks aside, the wonderful thing about this time of year is that gals and guys alike take the trouble to dress up like a dog’s dinner and celebrate their very own sense of style – whatever that may be. And that can only be a good thing.

Any time’s a good time to dress up to the nines and strut your stuff in my view. It makes you feel good, confident, full of fun and happy to be alive.

Got me to thinking about how much easier and affordable it can make the good times in the tough times, if your wardrobe is built around some must-have classics that can be dressed up, down or sideways for just about any occasion you care to mention.

2. A Fabulous White Shirt – Or 2, 3, 4 or more. This fashion icon works as well with figure hugging jeans as it does with flirty skirts. Let’s face it, anything at all really. Crisp cotton, slinky silks, shapely stretch – prim, professional, sassy, sexy with a button undone, it’s your call.

Suit Up – I don’t care if you choose to shop at K-Mart or YSL, if you invest money in nothing but one item in your wardrobe, make it a classic suit in a dark colour that’s great quality and fits superbly. It’s the killer wardrobe winner that will take you from job interview to cocktail party, business pitch to (dare I say it) family funeral. Have suit, guarantee you’ll always feel pulled together.
4. The Statement Jacket or Coat – Every wardrobe should have one. I’m deliberately keeping this one broad because there’s really no one-size-fits-all style that works for absolutely everyone. So take your pick, be it trench coat, blazer, leather, denim, vintage, cropped, floor length. Just make it a flattering, versatile style that will carry you through seasons to come in oh-so-many-different ways.
5. A Tasty Tote – I don’t know about you, but it seems that the more streamlined things become the more I need to cart around with me – sunnies, iphone, ipad, ipod, USB, wallet, keys, lippy, fragrance, tissues and antihistamines (allergy sufferer) and so it goes on. With a gazillion styles, colours and textures to choose from in the bag market these days, we’re spoilt for choice, but nothing beats an all-purpose tote in versatile black or tan. Holds everything yeah, little bit shapeless yeah, but definitely “je ne sais quoi” style.
